A scrapped car typically contains between 300 and 400 Kilos of a jumbled mass of plastics, metals, rubber, glass, fibres, dirt and oils that are left behind after the vehicle has been stripped of re-usable parts and reclaimable materials.

These stripped down cars are shipped to auto-shredding plants that use hammermills to smash the hulks into smaller chunks of metal, which are sold back to the iron and steel and non-ferrous metal industries.

Floatation plants can then be used to further separate the metals, due to their differing relative densities. However, similar materials such as Aluminium and Magnesium prove to be impossible to separate using these methods. Traditionally, the only solution would be to ship materials to specialist metal sorters in Taiwan for further processing and separation.
